What does this law say?
Section 17 of the BNS says that you are not guilty of a crime if you are justified by law. You are also not guilty if you make an honest mistake about the facts and believe you are allowed to do something. This mistake must be about the facts, not about the law itself.
Why does this law exist?
This law recognizes that people can make honest mistakes. It protects people who act in good faith, even if they misunderstand the situation. It encourages people to do what they believe is right.
Real-life impact
Imagine you see someone attacking another person. You step in to stop the attack, believing you are helping. If it turns out you were mistaken, you are still protected. This section helps protect those acting in good faith.
What happens if you break this law?
This section protects you from being punished. If you acted in good faith based on a mistake of fact, you are not guilty. There is no punishment under this section.
💡 Real Life Example
